Emperor - The Gods of the War
By Krzysztof Sroka
“The Gods of War is the fourth and final book in the "Emperor" series of books written by Conn Iggulden. The first book is called "The Gates of Rome" . The second book is called ”The Death of Kings”, and the third book is called "The Field of Swords" (I wrote intels about the first three books, and you can find links to the intels below this one). The series is based on the life of Julius Caesar and it's historical fiction. The third book ends when Caesar together with his legions crosses the Rubicon and decides to march on Rome. The fourth book starts with Pompey (the main Caesar's opponent) deciding to flee Rome together with Roman senators to Greece, and to prepare there for a civil war against Julius Caesar. The book continues with Caesar’s taking Rome and Italy without a fight, and then describes the war between Pompey and Caesar in Greece. From Greece the story moves to Egypt, and the author describes Caesar's relationship with Cleopatra there and the war with Cleopatra’s younger brother-husband. From Egypt Caesar goes back to Rome (the author skips the continued civil war in North African Roman Provinces and Spain) and the story continues till Caesar's assassination. Conn Iggulden describes very well not only Cesar’s character, but also Pompey and especially Brutus'. He presents his theory why Brutus betrayed his friend Caesar. Like the previous books in the series this one is also very well written and it's a fascinating story, worth reading. To conclude the intels about the Emperor series I must say that although I prefer the “Masters of Rome” written by Colleen McCullough, I really enjoyed reading the books written by Conn Iggulden. In the historical note Conn Iggulden writes: “In years to come, I may have to write the story of the aftermath of the assassination.” I hope he will write it. |

Thank you for sharing this information on the "Emperor" series of books, Kris. People really need to read and not spend so much time playing with their electronic games. Keep up the good work. Best wishes. Frederick
OK, I've added this series of books to my reading list for retirement.
