Emperor – The Gates of Rome and The Masters of Rome
By Krzysztof Sroka
I have liked reading books and watching movies about Gaius Julius Caesar for many years. I have read some biographies about him, but my favorite about him and other Roman Republic's historical figures is a series of historical fiction novels by Colleen McCullough named “Masters of Rome”. There are seven novel in the series: 1.The First Man in Rome 2.The Grass Crown 3.Fortune's Favourites 4.Caesar's Women 5.Caesar 6.The October Horse 7.Antony and Cleopatra All seven books are excellent, and although they are historical fiction, I learned from some biographies about Caesar that the author did a lot of research and she has not changed any historical facts. She did a lot of research. When I saw the first book of the “Emperor” series by Conn Iggulden “The Gates of Rome” I decided to buy and read it. The book is also historical fiction, and the author starts with the early years of Caesar's life. Little is know about those years, so of course the author gave him the childhood which he thinks could be a typical childhood of a Roman boy. It is very different that childhood of Caesar from the “Masters of Rome”, but it is also very interesting and well written. Later when Caesar lives in Rome, the historical facts are changed. At first I was disappointed because of that, but the author explains in the “historical note” why he did it. To summarize, the book is a very good read and it is difficult to put it down. I still prefer the Colleen McCullough's books, but I must say that Conn Iggulden's book is easier to read. I have already started reading the second book of the series “The Death of Kings” and I'm looking forward to reading all of the “Emperor” books. |
