Emperor - The Death of Kings

By Krzysztof Sroka

"The Death of King" is the second book in the "Emperor" series of books written by Conn Iggulden. The first book is called "The Gates of Rome" and I had written about it before (the link is below this Intel)

In the end of the first book young Julius Caesar was banished from Rome by the Dictator Sulla, and after leaving Rome he was accepted to serve on board of a Roman war galley.

The second book starts with the crew of the Roman galley storming the fort of Mytilene, where Caesar started building his fearsome reputation as a great leader.

After that the author takes a reader through main Caesar's adventures like Caesar captured by pirates, Caesar's vengeance against the pirates, war in Greece against Mithridates, return to Rome and the slave rebellion. The action takes us from North Africa to Greece, then to Rome and then to North and South Italy.

Iggulden describes some other interesting historical characters of ancient Rome like Sulla, Pompey, Crassus and Brutus. The story of Spartacus and the slave rebellion is also included in the second book.

The book is a historical fiction and some facts were changed by the author, which he explains in the "Historical Note".

The second book, like the first is brilliantly written and I hope that the third book of the series, which I'm going to read now, is as good as the first two.
